Yesterday I published a photo of our cat looking exhausted. Here's another, taken not by me this time, but by the minister of home affairs:
Despite our intention to be fast asleep when 2007 rolled in, this was not to be.
We stayed up somewhat later than we usually do, since there was something good on TV, but at 23h00 we went to bed, quite exhausted.
As we were doing our Bible reading, the cat started jumping about at the base of the bed, getting quite frantic.
Realising that there must be something alive under there, we moved the mattress and the base and stood them on their sides.
There stood a hideous dark grey rat. (I'd like to point out for the benefit of readers outside Africa that we do not live in squalor. This is a reasonably common occurrence in Africa.)
So we spent the next while trying to catch it in a bucket, but it was a fast critter. Then it vanished. So we moved everything, and I mean everything, out of our bedroom (except the cat - for reasons which should be apparent) so we could expose the creature.
Eventually, the cat saw something move and she flew in and emerged with the rat hanging from her jaws.
Then we spent the next 10 minutes trying to catch the cat so we could get the rat from her to dispose of it. This we achieved at the stroke of midnight.
So that's how we rang in the new year. Quite amusing from the outside, I suppose, but not when you're directly involved!
The cat deserves a special treat, and she'll get one.
How many pets have you owned in your lifetime? Tell us about them.

I don't count all the pets I had when still living with my parents before going off to university. After all, even though my parents told me they were mine, they were really not. My parents bought them, paid for their sterilisation, their shots, their food ....
I would guess that since leaving home back in the days of oxcarts, I have probably had around twenty-five cats. Before the minister of home affairs and I married in 2000, I lived on a dairy farm, so there was a lot of space. At a point I had about 16 cats at one time.
Right now, the minister of home affairs and I have just one cat. Although she has a name, we never use it, so she answers only to "cat".
I brought her from the farm. She moved in on her own as a kitten and follows me around like a shadow. And when I get home from work, I find her waiting at the door for me. A more loyal and devoted cat I have yet to come across.
