Taken this past weekend:
Green aphids are attacking my gold reef roses!
I enjoy taking photos of flowers. Below is a blossom on a mock orange growing in my garden. The photo was taken on Saturday, just after getting my new camera.
I planted the mock orange in honour of my late maternal grandmother, a keen gardener who always ensured that there was a mock orange in her garden, wherever she lived. She would also give a plant to all her friends and family when they moved into a new home. The flowers are tiny, but they give off an incredible scent.
My grandmother died after a massive heart attack in 1993, at the age of 68. So when I moved into our home in 2000, she wasn't there to give us a mock orange. But I planted one in a corner of the garden nonetheless, and we know it affectionately as granny's bush. (Click the photo for a larger version or here for the really large version.)
I had to start from scratch. I dug all the beds, composted and fertilised it all, and planted everything. I have also maintained it myself over the years, paying in sweat and pain. But it has been worth it. Over six-and-a-half years, the garden has been transformed into something we can enjoy.
