I began studying the organ when I was 10 or 11 years old and have played for many years. I especially love playing the pipe organ whenever I get a chance.
Of course, a pipe organ doesn't fit into a house, and I had to give away my electric organ when I moved to Johannesburg back in 1994, since the cottage I lived in was not big enough to have an organ there. So I bought a keyboard.
It is a really good keyboard. Instead of synthesised sounds, the sounds of 127 real instruments were digitally sampled into the keyboard. It also has a setting to allow touch-sensitive keys, like a piano.
I also play guitar and used to tinker around with a mouth organ (until it was stolen in the burglary in 2006).
But I have always wanted to play the piano. So I ordered "Piano For Dummies" and "Pop/Rock Piano Hits For Dummies", and both arrived today. I am going to learn how to play, using the keyboard, and if I am decent enough after a while, I'll have to convince the minister of home affairs that we need to buy a piano!
Being a lover of music, I was happy to see that a new music site was launched today - Audiophile SA (www.audiophilesa.com).
It is loaded with music reviews and news, and has an interactive forum. I foresee great things for it.
Audio: What's your favorite carol or holiday song?
Although perhaps it's asked in a slightly different way from last year (4 December 2006),
What song gives you the most holiday cheer?
Submitted by Roxy.
my answer is still the same:
Funnily enough, it is "Winter Wonderland". I say it is funny, because
Christmas is smack in the middle of summer here in South Africa. But
for whatever reason, that song gets me into the Christmas mood
immediately.
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.)
I don't really get the point of the question, nor why it should be called a horoscope.
Nevertheless, here you go:
1. Prince: Pop Life
2. Skillet: Fingernails
3. John C. Reilly: Cellophane
4. Aerosmith: Come Together
5. Sonny Boy Williamson II: It’s Sad to Be Alone
6. Soft Cell: Say Hello Wave Goodbye
7. The Beatles: Give Me Some Truth
8. Gene Loves Jezebel: Shaving My Neck
9. The Beatles: Across the Universe
10. Tanita Tikaram: Harm in Your Hand
For whatever that's worth.Yep, I've given my Vox the Christmas look already. I love Christmas and become rather much like a child around Christmas time. Usually, I wait until 1 December to start the whole Christmas thing, but this year, I'm starting early, so there.
We will still put our tree up on 1 December, as is our custom (we take it down on New Year's Eve).
Snap poll: When do you usually start listening to Christmas music and putting up the decorations?
Do you tend to like music in particular genres, or are your tastes all over the place? What are your most and least favorite musical genres?
Oh my genres are definitely all over the place.
I have a widget on my Last.fm page that says it all:
Music-wise, what was the first 45, single or download you bought?
Submitted by Paddy Melt Wagon.
My memory is a bit fuzzy on this one - it was so long ago! The first record I bought was (I think) Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits (1985). Before then, everything I had was on tape cassette.
But the first single I bought was (and again, I may be wrong) was "It's a Sin" by Pet Shop Boys. That was in 1987, during my first year at university.
It seems strange to me that I started buying records so late in life, but as I say, I had been buying everything on cassette tape before then. My parents had a record player in the lounge, but I had only a cassette player in my room. My folks gave me their old record player when I went to university.

This is Undersound. So far they have released one album and they are working on their second. The lead singer is a colleague of mine!
What's the best music documentary or concert film you've seen?
Woodstock, without a doubt. August 1969.
I have a DVD of the longer director's cut, which is excellent.
